Loft Conversion Questions & Answers

How long does a loft conversion take to complete?

On average a loft conversion takes six weeks, but generally this varies depending on the size of the job.

How much will it cost me?

This again varies on the size and specification of the job. Smaller jobs can be as little as £5,000

Do I need planning permission to convert my loft?

Not usually unless it’s a conservation or a listed building. However, local authority building regulation control is needed. This means that your local authority receives a copy of the plans and sends out a building inspector, and then issues a certificate on completion.

Are there any laws covering what I can/cannot do?

The local authority governs what you can do (usually rear dormers are fine as long as you don’t go above your ridge height ). Please feel free to get in touch for any advice on what you can build.

How much weight can be stored in the converted space?

The loft floor is built to current building regulations, providing you with as much strength as any other floor in your house.
