1. Never pay upfront - ever!
2. Ensure that your job is being correctly handled, and that the local authorities are aware of it
3. Check that all contractors are fully qualified and insured
4. Make sure all work is completed correctly with a relevant certificate provided
5. Make sure you and your builder are clear on all of the finishing touches, and that these are clearly stated on a relevant contract
